The mission of the Custodial Divison of the Physical Plant Department is “to provide quality customer service to all students, staff and the general public who visit our campus. We do so with an eye toward excellence and with the highest degree of integrity,” according to Dominic Herald, custodial supervisor I.
The college employs approximately 50 custodians, who are counted on to maintain the day-to-day cleanliness of all facilities throughout the campus to help ensure the health and safety of all. In addition, special projects are required at various times throughout the year. For example, over the summer, custodians restore all of the carpets and tile floors in every building of the campus — that equals more than a million square feet of space!
Herald says his career here at Hudson Valley Community College is a “true testament to how much one can achieve with enough determination.” He joined the custodial staff in 1991, transitioned to special assignment worker in 1996 and became a custodial supervisor II in 2000. Herald started taking courses while working full-time and graduated in 2008 with an associate’s degree in plant utilities technology. Soon after he graduated, he was hired as custodial supervisor I.
